Vikings have ambitious development plans for Eagan headquarters

If you own a business, you know that most of the time, there is no resting on your laurels. If you are successful and have developed a product or service that is in demand, there is a good chance that someone else with think, "I can do that better." And one day, they will become your competitor and if you sit back and do not react correctly, at some point your competitor may force you out of the business.

One has only to think of the recent experience of RPM, the manufacturer of the Blackberry phone. They were apparently unconcerned when the iPhone was introduced. How many people do you know today who still use a Blackberry phone? And so it is with even very successful enterprises, the pressure to constantly move forward is driven by the ever present risk of becoming the next Blackberry or Kodak.

The NFL seems incredibly successful. With multi-billion dollar television contracts, the marketing juggernaut of professional football seems unstoppable. But with a plethora of entertainment options presented to consumers, even the NFL is looking for more ways to enhance their consumers' experience.

The Minnesota Vikings have announced plans which they hope will enhance their fans experience with a new headquarters in Eagan that would include a large number of other commercial real estate elements beyond a team headquarters office and practice field space.

This makes sense, given the team owner's background and experience with commercial real estate development on the East Coast. The plans include "the team’s training facility, office building and small stadium." They also plan, during the next 15 years, to add hotels, residential buildings, office buildings and retail space.

These ambitious plans would create one of the largest mixed-use office/residential/retail spaces in the Twin Cities area, but NFL and its team owners are known for the scale of their ambition.
